- The Carnival of Venice has ancient origins and a rich history of charm that dates back to the Middle Ages. Here is a brief summary of the most significant moments in its evolution:
- Medieval origins
- The Carnival was born in the 9th-10th century as a pre-Hecessimal celebration, a period when it was allowed to abound in festivals, disguises and entertainment before the rigors of the Christian Lent.
- Golden Age: The Renaissance
- In the Renaissance, the Venice Carnival reached its peak. Extraordinary masks and costumes allowed individuals to hide their identity, breaking down social barriers and allowing freedom that would otherwise have been unthinkable. Nobles and commoners mixed, and the streets filled with shows, music and games.
- The Masks
- Masks, an iconic element of the Carnival, were regulated since the thirteenth century. The bauta (white mask with black cloak), the moretta (a black oval mask worn by women) and the face (a simple and anonymous mask) became distinctive symbols. Each mask had a specific role, often satirical or theatrical.
- The Decline
- In the 18th century, during the Austrian domination, the Carnival began to lose its splendour, until it was banned at the end of the 18th century, with the arrival of Napoleon. For over a century, celebrations were limited to private events.
- Modern Renaissance
- The Carnival was officially relaunched in 1979, thanks to an initiative of the Municipality of Venice to enhance the historical and cultural traditions of the city. Since then, it has become one of the most important events in the world, attracting millions of visitors.

- The Carnival Today
- The Carnival of Venice today is a fusion of ancient traditions and new interpretations. The event includes costume parades, theatre performances, concerts and the famous “Flight of the Angel”, in which a symbolic figure descends from the bell tower of San Marco to officially open the celebrations.
