Carnevale di Adrano

History of the Adrano Carnival

  • The Adrano Carnival, one of the city’s most vibrant traditions located on the slopes of Mount Etna, has deep historical roots and is known for its extraordinary combination of folklore, creativity and community.

  • The Origins
  • The first evidence of the Carnival of Adrano dates back to the eighteenth century. Like many Sicilian carnival celebrations, also in Adrano the Carnival was born as a popular festival that preceded the Lent period, offering an opportunity to indulge in food, entertainment and shows before the rigors of religious fasting.
  • In the past, masks were simple and homemade, and the party took place mainly in the squares, where they held collective dances and improvised performances in Sicilian dialect. Among the most characteristic traditions were the “masked dances”, often accompanied by folk songs and music of traditional instruments such as tamburello and accordion.
  • Evolution and Renewal
  • In the 20th century, the Adrano Carnival began to become a more structured event. During this period allegorical floats were introduced, decorated with figures of papier-mâché and satirical representations of political characters, historical figures or fantasy scenes.
  • Over the years, the festival has also integrated competitions between masked groups, who perform in dance choreographies and theatrical performances. These elements have helped to make the Carnival a celebration expected not only by the inhabitants of Adrano, but also by visitors from neighboring countries.
  • Iconic Traditions
  • The floats: artistic creations that cross the main streets of Adrano, enriched with lights and accompanied by music.
  • Traditional masks: In addition to modern costumes, some people still wear masks that recall figures of the Sicilian tradition, such as the “Massaru” (the farmer).
  • Gastronomy: During the Carnival, we celebrate typical Sicilian dishes, with particular attention to desserts such as chatter, sphinxes and zeppole.
